What You’ll Do
Your offbeat white desert adventure begins in the morning.
Relax on a scenic 2-hour drive from Jaipur to Sambhar in your private AC car as your guide shares stories of how this 2500-year-old lake was created by Goddess Shakambari and how British fought for its salt.
Arrive in Sambhar Heritage Town - a sleepy town that time forgot. Start with the Sambhar Salt Museum and Circuit House - see British-era machines, old photos, and learn how salt has been made here for 2500 years. Walk through salt pans and see salt workers carrying salt the same way as 1000 years ago. See the famous narrow-gauge salt train.
Then drive onto the vast white salt lake. As you step onto the endless white crust, it feels like walking on snow. Hop on a local open jeep and ride deep inside the lake bed for 30-40 minutes - bumping over salt crystals, splashing through shallow water reflections, and reaching spots where you see nothing but white till the horizon. In winter, see hundreds of flamingos painting the lake pink. Stop for photos that look exactly like Rann of Kutch.
Continue to the sacred Shakambari Mata Temple on a small hillock. A short climb of 50 stairs, seek blessings from the guardian goddess of Sambhar, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the entire white lake from the top.
Enjoy a simple, authentic Rajasthani lunch at a local dhaba in Sambhar town.
As evening comes, head to the best sunset point on the lake. Sit on the salt crust, sip masala chai from a local stall, and watch the sun go down over the white desert - the most peaceful sunset you'll see near Jaipur.
After a day of white desert and stories, drive back comfortably to Jaipur with drop-off at your hotel.
